MR-Tandem

Cloud-based peptide search

MR-Tandem is a cloud-based version of the popular X!Tandem peptide search engine. As an open-source project, use of MR-Tandem is free for academic and commercial use.

MR-Tandem runs on any Hadoop cluster, but offers special support for Amazon Web Services (AWS) for creating inexpensive on-demand peptide search clusters. MR-Tandem enables large peptide searches to be conducted inexpensively and quickly, including searches that might not otherwise be feasible with the compute resources a researcher has at hand. For example, a larger number of post-translational modifications can be considered.

MR-Tandem is designed to drop in wherever X!Tandem is already in use and requires no modification to existing X!Tandem parameter files, and only minimal modification to X!Tandem-based workflows.

Using MR-Tandem:

  • To use MR-Tandem on AWS, begin by dowloading the quick start guide for Windows and Linux. The cloud computers you use will always be Linux boxes that are part of a Hadoop cluster. Your local computer can be Windows or Linux. If you know how to use the Unix shell on a Mac, follow the Linux instructions.
  • To use MR-Tandem on your own Hadoop cluster or for more detailed instructions, download the user manual.
  • You can dive right in on Windows by downloading the Windows installer.
  • Insilicos provides consulting services in designing and managing large proteomics projects. For more information, contact Insilicos at the product support page or info@insilicos.com
  • A paper describing Insilicos work on MR-Tandem is available here. Insilicos gratefully acknowledges the contributors to the X!Tandem project, on which MR-Tandem is based.
