Insilicos Appoints Fraley to Senior Scientist Post
Seattle, 28 December 2008 - Insilicos today announced the appointment of Dr. Chris Fraley as Senior Scientist for the company. A specialist in statistical computing and data mining, Fraley will be leading a project to develop predictive models of disease based on LARS-related techniques, which are known for accurate, interpretable and stable modeling.
"Dr. Fraley's deep expertise in computational statistics fits well with Insilicos' scientific objectives," said Insilicos Chief Scientist Dr. Bryan Prazen. "To diagnose a complex disease like heart disease, we select a few important variables from a very, very large number of candidates. Traditional statistical approaches sometimes don't have the horsepower to get that job done. Dr. Fraley's work with LARS is therefore an important addition to our ability to understand disease."
Dr. Fraley received her PhD from Stanford University in computer science, and has an ongoing research appointment at the University of Washington Department of Statistics. Her background includes development and implementation of a range of cutting-edge statistical techniques at Insightful Corp. and Statistical Sciences, Inc.
LARS, or Least Angle Regression, is a class of statistical methods for making stable predictions from high dimensional data. This is important to Insilicos' work because biological data often has a large number of mathematical dimensions. LARS and its extensions have become increasingly popular for dealing with complex data from biomedical research as well as many other areas of application.
Insilicos LLC is a biomarker discovery and diagnostic development company, concentrating on cardiovascular disease.
